Citizens Academy
The Simi Valley Police Department is proud to offer the Citizens Police Academy to members of the community. The Citizens Police Academy program is designed to increase understanding of the operational policies and procedures of the Police Department and the Ventura County Criminal Justice System.
Students receive instruction from representatives of the Simi Valley Police Department, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, and other agencies that work in partnership with SVPD. The classes will include such topics as:
-
Narcotics
-
Dispatch
-
S.W.A.T.
-
Criminal justice system and other related subjects
The Citizens Police Academy is open to any adult who lives or works in Simi Valley, provided that they do not have any felony convictions or pending criminal actions at the time of application. Prior to acceptance into the program, applicants will be required to undergo a short criminal history check to participate in a ride along with a uniformed Simi Valley Police Department Officer.
Classes generally meet 10 times, once per year, for two and a half hours each session in the evening at the Simi Valley Police Department (map). Two classes are taught “off campus.” Citizens Academy participants are allowed to miss up to two classes and still receive their Certificate of Completion. Any participant who misses three classes or more will be dropped from the program. Class size is limited to 25 persons, and there is no cost to the student.
Interested persons must complete an application (mailed upon request) and return it to the Police Department to the attention of Janet Seghi, Volunteer Coordinator. To be placed on the waiting list for the next session of classes, call (805) 583-6287 and leave your contact information.
