The Simi Valley Youth Council is an advisory board to the City Council on issues affecting youth in the community and is comprised of 21 members and up to three alternates. Each high school and middle school is represented on the Youth Council, as well as the Community at Large.
Membership on the Youth Council is open to residents of the City of Simi Valley who are in 7th through 12th grade. The current Youth Council term began on July 1, 2024, and will conclude on June 30, 2025.
Applications to serve on the Youth Council are accepted year-round, and successful applicants are appointed by the City Council each June. The application period to serve on the 2025-26 Youth Council term will open in March 2025.
Each year, the Youth Council partners with the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute to hold a Youth Town Hall. This event allows up to 500+ middle and high school students the opportunity to hear public and/or elected officials discuss local and statewide civic matters ranging from education to policy-making.
To maximize participation, attendees pose their questions or share their concerns anonymously via Twitter.
The Youth Town Hall is recognized as an educational activity by the Simi Valley Unified School District and approved as school business with prior teacher notification.
Each year, the Youth Council hosts a Youth Summit annual leadership conference. Youth Summit participants are inspired by a motivational speaker, participate in team building and leadership exercises, learn the importance of community involvement, and share lunch while discussing community issues and ideas with local dignitaries.
The 2024 Youth Summit will be held on Friday, October 11, 2024. Students in eighth through twelfth grades must register by Friday, September 20, 2024. The Youth Summit is recognized as an educational activity by the Simi Valley Unified School District and is approved as school business with prior teacher notification.
