The City of Simi Valley’s Tree Advisory Board has announced plans for their tenth annual Arbor Day program set for Saturday, May 1, 2010, 10:00 a.m., at the Veterans Plaza in Rancho Tapo Community Park, located at 3700 Avenida Simi. The City of Simi Valley is recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA and Tree Growth Community.
This year’s program theme focuses on the National Arbor Day Foundation theme “Trees are Terrific…and Energy Wise.” Those in attendance will be greeted by more than 40 colored posters generated by local fifth grade classes who participated in the local and National Arbor Day Poster Contest program and science fair projects generated by students from Big Springs Elementary School.
The highlight of the ceremony will include the judging and presentation of awards to the first, second, and third place winners of the local Arbor Day Poster Contest program, hands-on educational workshops presented by local nurseries, and demonstration of the new Water Wise Gardening interactive website, which features a searchable water-wise plant database with photos and the ability to create and print a customized plant list for residents located throughout Ventura County.
The general public is invited to participate in the day’s events. Refreshments will be served and a limited supply of 15-gallon trees, oak seedlings, and compost provided by Agromin will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis to those attending the event.
