Simi Valley residents who will be in the 7th through 12th grade as of the 2017-2018 school year, and are interested in learning about, and becoming involved in their local City government are invited to apply for membership on the Simi Valley Youth Council. Applications are now being accepted for one year terms of office, with meetings beginning in September 2017.
The Simi Valley Youth Council is comprised of 21 middle school and high school youth and three alternates who serve in an advisory capacity to the City Council on teen related issues. The members learn about and participate in City government, conduct special projects, and advise the City Council on the needs and concerns of the City’s teens. Each year the Youth Council hosts a Youth Summit that is designed to encourage youth to contribute to their community. Youth Council representatives provide monthly activity reports at the City Council meetings. In addition, two City Council Members serve as liaisons to the Youth Council.
The Youth Council meets at 5:00 p.m., for approximately one hour on the first and third Tuesdays of each month during the regular school year. To learn more about the Youth Council, students are invited to attend an upcoming Youth Council meeting on April 18, 2017, in room 122, at the Simi Valley Senior Center. All Youth Council meetings are open to the public.
Application forms for Youth Council positions are available on the City's website, www.simivalley.org/YouthCouncilApp, at City Hall, the Simi Valley Public Library, and local middle schools and high schools. For further information, contact Kristin Tignac, Youth Council Coordinator, at (805) 583-6766. The deadline to apply for the 2017-2018 Youth Council term is 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 24, 2017.
