Ventura County's Community for a Clean Watershed is pleased to announce they are once again offering 50-gallon rain barrels through their rain barrel program. The rain barrels are offered at a discounted price to encourage residents to conserve precious water resources as well as to protect water quality.
Order rain barrels online at: www.rainbarrelprogram.org/venturacounty
The rain barrels can be purchased directly through the program's website using a credit card. To place a phone order or to request a mail-in form call (919) 983-1699/EST and ask for the Ventura County rain barrel program price. The normal retail price is $149, but through this special promotion they are only $75 plus tax.
Order by May 8th for a May 14th pick up at your choice of two locations; Ventura or Moorpark. All rain barrels must be pre-purchased.
Residents can use rain barrels to capture the rain from their rooftops, which will save thousands of gallons of reusable water. Just one inch of rain yields 600 gallons of usable water per every 1000 sq. ft. of roof space. This water would typically flow down streets and be sent down the storm drain carrying potential contaminants and contributing to flash flooding.
Water collected by rain barrels can be used to water trees, gardens, and lawns. Adding mulch and rain depressions in our landscapes for rain gardens will also help to slow runoff and retain more moisture in the landscape.
Residents are encouraged to go to www.socalwatersmart.com or contact their local water purveyor to check their eligibility for available rebates.
65 gallon compost bins are also available for $55 plus tax through the website listed above.
