The City of Simi Valley’s Tree Advisory Board has announced plans for the 11th annual Arbor Day program set for Saturday, May 7, 2011, 10:00 a.m., at the Veterans Plaza in Rancho Tapo Community Park, located at 3700 Avenida Simi. The City of Simi Valley is recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA and Tree Growth Community.

This year’s program focuses on the theme “Trees…a Joy Forever”. Those in attendance will be greeted by colored posters generated by local fourth and fifth grade classes who participated in the City’s Arbor Day Poster Contest program and science fair projects generated by sixth grade elementary school students.

The highlight of the ceremony will include the judging and presentation of awards to the first, second, and third place winners of the Arbor Day Poster Contest program and the planting of cherry trees in memory of Simi Valley residents Jason Oliver and Marine Corps Reserve Staff Sgt. Joshua Cullins who died while on active duty in Afghanistan.

Also featured will be hands-on educational workshops for youth and adults, displays by local gardening professionals, and information on sustainable home and landscape practices.

The general public is invited to participate in the day’s events. Refreshments will be served and a limited supply of 15-gallon trees, oak seedlings, and compost provided by Agromin will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis to those attending the event.
