On October 16, 2020, beginning at 7:00 p.m., the Simi Valley Youth Council will host a virtual Stop Bullying event using Zoom’s video platform. The event will consist of a screening of Sara Hirsch Bordo’s 2015 documentary “A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story” followed by a community call-to-action discussion.
Presented by the Youth Council, this event will gather local middle and high school students to open a dialog and develop an action plan to reduce bullying in the community. Given that targets of bullying are more likely to acquire physical, emotional, behavioral, and learning problems, and are more likely to refrain from participating in school, workplace, and other activities, this event is designed to stop this preventable behavior through building community discourse and unity.
To receive the Zoom login information, participants must register at http://bit.ly/ycstop by 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16, 2020. This free event is open to the public and intended for ages 13 and over. With the sensitive nature of bullying and the documentary’s PG-13 film rating, parents are cautioned that some of the material may not be suitable for children 12 and under.
The Youth Council is an advisory board appointed by the City Council to advise the City on issues affecting youth in the community. Community members and youth are encouraged to follow the Youth Council on Instagram: @simivalleyyouthcouncil.
